NOVA Chemicals Corporation is a leading North American petrochemical company headquartered in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, and one of the largest ethylene and polyethylene producers in the industry. Founded in 1954 as the Alberta Gas Trunk Line Company before transitioning into petrochemicals, the company has evolved into Canada's largest petrochemical producer.
Core Business
NOVA Chemicals operates two primary business segments:
Olefins/Polyolefins — Produces and markets approximately 8 billion pounds of ethylene annually across production facilities in Canada (Joffre, Alberta and Corunna, Ontario) and the United States (Geismar, Louisiana). The company also produces polyethylene resins, propylene, butadiene, and various chemical co-products. This segment represents the principal business and includes the proprietary Advanced SCLAIRTECH™ technology for polyethylene production.
Expandable Styrenics — Produces expandable polystyrene and higher-value styrenic polymers at facilities in Monaca, Pennsylvania and Painesville, Ohio.
Manufacturing Footprint
NOVA operates a diverse North American manufacturing footprint anchored by two major integrated complexes:
Joffre Complex (Alberta) — NOVA's flagship site featuring three steam crackers (E1, E2, E3) producing over 6 billion pounds of ethylene annually, two polyethylene facilities (PE1 and AST1) producing over 2.2 billion pounds annually, plus significant co-products totaling approximately 830 million pounds per year. This 900-acre complex directly employs over 700 employees and includes a joint 480 MW cogeneration plant.
Sarnia-Lambton Complex (Ontario) — Four integrated facilities producing approximately 4.2 billion pounds combined:
- Corunna Site: 1.8 billion pounds ethylene annually plus 700 million pounds co-products
- Rokeby Site: 1 billion pounds polyethylene annually (Advanced SCLAIRTECH™ AST2)
- Moore Site: 840 million pounds polyethylene annually
- St. Clair River Site: 395 million pounds polyethylene annually (SCLAIRTECH™)
U.S. Operations — Ethylene and polyethylene from the Geismar complex in Louisiana, plus expandable polystyrene production at Monaca (Pennsylvania) and Painesville (Ohio).
Technology and Innovation Centers — Calgary (Alberta), Monaca (Pennsylvania), Fribourg (Switzerland), and Shanghai (China) supporting research, development, and customer technical service.
Together, these facilities position NOVA as Canada's largest petrochemical producer and one of North America's leading olefins and polyolefins manufacturers.
Recent Ownership Transition
Following the March 2025 acquisition by Borouge (a joint venture between Abu Dhabi National Oil Company and Austria's OMV for $13.4 billion USD), NOVA Chemicals continues operating as a subsidiary entity within the newly consolidated polyolefins powerhouse, creating the world's fourth-largest polyolefins producer.
