Description

The Dangote Refinery is the world's largest single-train crude oil processing facility and Africa's largest refinery, situated on a 2,500-hectare (6,180-acre) site within the Dangote Industries Free Zone at Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos State, on the Atlantic coast of Nigeria. The complex was inaugurated by President Muhammadu Buhari on 22 May 2023 and reached full nameplate capacity of 650,000 barrels per day (bpd) in early 2026. At full throughput, the facility produces up to 50 million litres of gasoline and 15 million litres of diesel daily, with surplus volumes earmarked for export to regional and international markets.

Processing Configuration

The refinery is an integrated refining and petrochemical complex, designed to process a range of light and medium crude grades into Euro-V quality clean fuels. Its core processing train includes:

  • Crude Distillation Unit (CDU) — primary crude separation
  • Mild Hydrocracking (MHC) Unit — middle distillate upgrading
  • Residual Fluid Catalytic Cracking (RFCC) Unit — residue upgrading to transport fuels
  • Naphtha Hydrotreater and RFCC Gasoline Hydrodesulphurisation (HDS) Unit — sulphur removal
  • STRATCO® Alkylation Unit — high-octane gasoline blending component production
  • MECS® Sulphuric Acid Regeneration (SAR) Unit and MECS® DynaWave® Sulphur Recovery Unit
  • Hydrogen Generation Complex — two Steam Methane Reformer (SMR) units generating 200,000 Nm³/h of hydrogen for sulphur-free fuel production
  • Polypropylene Unit — petrochemical output from refinery by-products
  • BELCO® EDV® Fluid Catalytic Cracking Unit — emissions control

Annual Output Capacity

Product Annual Capacity
Gasoline 10.4 million tonnes (Mt)
Diesel 4.6 Mt
Jet Fuel (Aviation) 4.0 Mt
Polypropylene 0.69 Mt
Propane 0.24 Mt
Carbon Black Feed 0.5 Mt
Sulphur 32,000 tonnes

Site Infrastructure

The refinery complex includes comprehensive on-site infrastructure developed to support both operations and international trade:

  • Marine Terminal — deepwater port capable of receiving Post-Panamax class vessels (draught: 16.5m), with breakwater, jetty, and harbour
  • Pipeline System — crude receipt and product dispatch infrastructure with Niger Delta connectivity
  • Tank Storage Facilities — large-scale crude and refined product tankage
  • Integrated Fertiliser Plant — utilising refinery by-products as feedstock
  • Power Generation — natural gas-fired on-site electricity supply

Environmental & Regulatory Compliance

The refinery was designed to meet the most stringent international environmental standards, conforming to World Bank, US EPA, EU, and Nigerian Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) emission and effluent norms. Its Euro-V fuel output specification reflects alignment with European clean-fuel standards, positioning Nigerian-produced product for both domestic consumption and premium export markets.
