The Fawley Petrochemical Complex is UK's largest integrated refining and petrochemical manufacturing complex, opened in 1951 and spanning 3,250 acres on Southampton Water. The facility processes 270,000 barrels per day of crude oil—representing 20% of UK refining capacity—producing fuels, lubricants, and specialty chemicals for pharmaceutical, automotive, cosmetics, and textile industries. Annual petrochemical output exceeds 850,000 tonnes, while the site's 1.5-kilometer marine terminal handles approximately 2,000 vessel movements and 22 million tonnes of crude oil and products annually. The complex employs 2,500 staff and contractors, with approximately one in six cars in the UK running on Fawley-produced fuels. ExxonMobil invested £800 million ($1 billion) in facility upgrades between 2018-2020 to increase ultra-low sulfur diesel production by 45%.
