Basell Polyolefine's Münchsmünster site is a major petrochemical production facility located near the village of Münchsmünster in Bavaria, approximately 70 kilometers north of Munich. Established in 1972, the site covers 38 hectares within the broader Münchsmünster industrial park and employs around 220–380 people, including both direct staff and contractors.

Production Units

The site houses a flexible-feed steam cracker with a capacity of approximately 400,000 metric tons of ethylene per year, as well as facilities for producing propylene and high-density polyethylene (HDPE). The HDPE plant, started up in 2010, uses LyondellBasell’s advanced Hostalen ACP (Advanced Cascade Process) technology and has a capacity of 320,000 tons per year.

Site Infrastructure

The Münchsmünster site is part of a unique industrial park model, historically developed as a pooled operation by Hoechst AG, Gelsenberg AG (later Ruhr Oel/BP), and Süddeutsche Kalkstickstoff-Werke AG (later Evonik). Today, the infrastructure is managed by Industriepark Münchsmünster GmbH & Co. KG, with Basell Polyolefine GmbH holding a significant stake alongside Evonik and BP/Ruhr Oel.

Certifications and Sustainability

The site is certified to international standards for quality, environmental, and energy management, and includes its own wastewater treatment facility. LyondellBasell emphasizes responsible operations and community engagement, supporting local initiatives and maintaining high standards for safety and environmental performance.
