Asatobu Refinery is a historic refinery that began operations in 1943 in Waki Town, a calm area facing the Seto Inland Sea, located in the easternmost part of Yamaguchi Prefecture. Approximately 90% of the petroleum products produced are light oils, which is a typical decomposition type refinery, and the most distinctive feature is that it is equipped with petroleum coke production equipment that is not found in ordinary refineries. The high-quality needle coke for electric furnace electrodes produced here boasts the world's highest quality, and the highest-grade products used for thick graphite electrodes account for more than 50% of the world share.
