PT PERTAMINA (PERSERO) Refinery Unit IV Cilacap is one of 7 processing units in the country, with the largest production capacity of 348,000 barrels/day and the most complete facilities. This refinery is strategically important as it supplies 34% of national fuel needs or 60% of fuel needs in Java. Additionally, this refinery is currently the only one in the country that produces asphalt and base oil for infrastructure development needs. Refinery Units

Oil Refinery I
Built in 1974 with an initial capacity of 100,000 barrels/day, Oil Refinery I has been operating since its inauguration by the President of Indonesia on August 24, 1976. In line with increasing consumer needs, its capacity was increased through a Debottlenecking project in 1998/1999 to 118,000 barrels/day. This refinery is designed to process crude oil from the Middle East, aiming to produce both fuel and non-fuel products, specifically lubricating oil base and asphalt.

Oil Refinery II
Built in 1981 to meet increasing domestic fuel demands, Oil Refinery II began operations on August 4, 1983, with an initial capacity of 200,000 barrels/day. Its capacity was later increased to 230,000 barrels/day in 1998/1999. This refinery processes "cocktail" oil, a mixture of domestic and imported crude oil.

Paraxylene Refinery
Built in 1988 and inaugurated on December 20, 1990, this refinery produces non-fuel and petrochemical products. Its construction was based on:

1. Available Naphtha raw material from Oil Refinery II Cilacap
2. Supporting facilities including dock tanks and utilities
3. Market opportunities both domestic and international

Products Manufactured

The refinery produces various products including:

Asphalt

• Description: Produced by Refinery Lube Oil Complex (LOC) I/II/III from Asphaltic Crude Oil, it is semi-solid, non-metallic, soluble in CS₂ (Carbon Disulphide), with waterproofing and adhesive properties. Packaging available in bulk, drums, and small-scale carton packages of 5, 10, 20, and 25 kg.

• Uses: Used in various Indonesian projects for:
  • Road and aircraft runway construction as an adhesive, filling material, and waterproofing agent
  • Anti-rust coating, electrical insulation, and sound/vibration dampening for flooring

Heavy Aromatics

• Description: A by-product from PT PERTAMINA Refinery Unit IV Cilacap produced by the Naphtha Hydro Treater unit.
   
• Use: As a solvent material.

Lube Base Oil

• Description: Basic lubricant raw material produced by MEK Dewaxing Units (MDU) I, II, and III in liquid form.

• Uses: Raw material for various machinery lubricants, both heavy and light. Also used in cosmetic products.

Low Sulphur Waxy Residue (LSWR)

• Description: Bottom product produced by the Crude Distillation Unit.
   
• Uses: Raw material for further processing into various fuel and non-fuel products, also used as heating material in cold-climate countries.

Minarex

• Description: Minarex is produced by PT PERTAMINA (PERSERO) Refinery Unit IV Cilacap to meet the needs for processing oil in rubber products, tire, and printing ink industries. Minarex, as a processing aid, plays a vital role in the manufacture of rubber components for the tire industry and rubber products industry by:
  • Improving the rubber rejection and expansion processes
  • Reducing the viscosity of rubber components

• Uses: Used as a "solvent" in the printing industry to improve ink quality.

Paraffinic Oil

• Description: A processing oil containing Paraffinic Hydrocarbon, Naphthenics, and small amount of Aromatic Hydrocarbons.

  • Paraffinic Oil 60
  • Paraffinic Oil 95
     
• Uses:
  • Chemical auxiliary in rubber products industry (vehicle tires, fan belts, vehicle parts)
  • Processing oil and extender for natural and synthetic rubber polymers
  • Base oil for printing ink

• Description: Produced in liquid form by the refinery.
   
• Uses: Raw material for TNT (explosives), solvents, dyes, resin manufacturing. Also used in perfumes, plasticizers, and pharmaceuticals.
