Description

Straight run kerosene is a type of kerosene obtained directly from the atmospheric distillation of crude oil, without any additional chemical processing or cracking. During the distillation process, crude oil is heated to temperatures between 150°C and 300°C, allowing the kerosene fraction to separate naturally from other petroleum components[1].

Straight Run Kerosene is a complex combination of hydrocarbons having carbon numbers predominantly in the range of C9 through C16 and boiling in the range of approximately 180°C to 300°C (356°F to 572°)[2].

The composition varies depending on the crude oil source and includes[3]:

  • Alkanes (paraffins) and cycloalkanes (naphthenes) together constitute the major part
  • Olefins are present at concentrations of about 1% or less
  • Aromatics content depends on the crude oil source, with single-ring alkylbenzenes and double-ring alkylnaphthalenes present
  • Dinuclear aromatic naphthalenes range from 0.1% to 3%
  • Benzene content is normally below 0.02% due to the higher boiling range

The maximum final boiling range of approximately 300°C tends to exclude the presence of high-boiling polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons such as three- to seven-ring condensed aromatic structures. The benzene content is normally below 0.02% due to kerosene's higher boiling range[3].
