Description

Vinyl Chloride is an Organochloride with the formula H2C=CHCl. It is also called Vinyl Chloride Monomer (VCM) or Chloroethene. This colorless compound is an important industrial chemical chiefly used to produce the polymer Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC).

Two methods are employed for producing Vinyl Chloride, the hydrochlorination of Acetylene and the dehydrochlorination of Ethylene Dichloride (1,2-Dichloroethane) or EDC Cracking. Numerous attempts have been made to convert Ethane directly to Vinyl Chloride.
