Originally founded in 1956 as "Österreichische Mineralölverwaltung Aktiengesellschaft" (Austrian Mineral Oil Administration Stock Company), the company officially rebranded to simply "OMV" in 1995.

OMV operates through three core business pillars:​

  • Chemicals & Materials: Including its majority stake in Borealis
  • Fuels & Feedstock: Encompassing refining operations in Austria, Germany, and Romania
  • Energy: Covering upstream oil and gas exploration and production

OMV is publicly traded and represents one of the largest industrial companies by revenue in Central Europe.
