Equinor ASA is a Norwegian multinational energy company and one of the world's largest integrated oil and gas companies, headquartered in Stavanger, Norway. Originally established in 1972 as Statoil by the Norwegian government, the company was renamed to Equinor in 2018 to reflect its strategic evolution toward becoming a broad energy company encompassing both traditional hydrocarbons and renewable energy solutions.
Equinor dominates Norway's petroleum sector, accounting for approximately 70% of Norway's oil and gas output and producing around 2 million barrels of oil daily. As the largest operator on the Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS), the company operates over 60% of total production from the region. Key operated fields include major installations such as Troll, Gullfaks, Oseberg, Statfjord, and the flagship Johan Sverdrup field.
The Johan Sverdrup field stands as Equinor's crown jewel, representing the third-largest oil field on the Norwegian shelf with estimated reserves of 2.7 billion barrels of oil equivalent. At plateau production, the field delivers up to 755,000 barrels per day, accounting for roughly one-third of Norwegian oil production. Notably, Johan Sverdrup demonstrates exceptional environmental performance with CO₂ emissions of only 0.67 kg per barrel, approximately 5% of the global average, thanks to electrification with power from shore.
Beyond Norway, Equinor maintains significant international operations across more than 30 countries. The company operates major projects in the Gulf of Mexico, Brazil, the United Kingdom, Angola, Canada, and Australia, among others. In Brazil, Equinor holds interests in the offshore Peregrino oil field, though the company announced the divestment of this asset for $3.5 billion in 2025.
As Europe's second-largest gas supplier and the world's sixth-largest natural gas supplier, Equinor plays a crucial role in European energy security. The company operates extensive pipeline infrastructure connecting Norwegian production to European markets through systems including Zeepipe, Statpipe, and Europipe networks.
