Chemical components of base oils
Base oils are refined petroleum products or synthetic hydrocarbons that serve as the primary component (70-99%) in lubricant formulations. They are produced through two main routes:
- Refining of crude oil using distillation, with subsequent processing of the heavier fractions into bitumen (asphalt) and base oils through solvent deasphalting, and subsequent purification processes
- Through chemical synthesis to create Polyalphaolefins (PAO) and esters.
