Broader thermal breakdown of organic/carbon precursors (polymers, bio-feedstocks, coal tar, resins) in inert or reducing atmospheres to produce hard carbon, pyrolytic carbon, carbon black, or carbon precursor intermediates. Distinct from Carbonisation in that the feedstock is not a pre-formed fibre and the product targets are battery-grade carbons, carbon blacks, or pyrolytic deposits.
