The SINOPEC Beijing Yanshan Petrochemical Complex is one of China’s most prominent and comprehensive refining and petrochemical production bases. Located in the Yanshan area of Beijing’s Fangshan District, the complex was established in 1970 and has grown into a highly integrated site that combines oil refining, petrochemical production, and advanced materials manufacturing. Its strategic location near Beijing allows it to supply vital fuels and chemical products to the capital region and beyond.
The complex boasts a crude oil processing capacity of approximately 10 million tons per year, making it one of the largest refineries in northern China. The heart of its operations is a modern refinery equipped with atmospheric and vacuum distillation units, catalytic cracking, hydrocracking, and reforming units.
These facilities convert crude oil into a range of refined products, including high-quality gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel. In recent years, the refinery has been upgraded to produce ultra-low sulfur fuels that meet the stringent Beijing VI-b emission standards, supporting the city’s drive for cleaner air.
Beyond traditional refining, Yanshan is a major producer of petrochemicals, with an annual ethylene capacity of around 800,000 tons. The complex employs advanced steam cracking technology to convert naphtha and other light hydrocarbons into ethylene, propylene, and other key building blocks for the chemical industry. These olefins feed a wide array of downstream units that manufacture synthetic resins such as polyethylene and polypropylene, as well as synthetic rubbers including polybutadiene and SBS (styrene-butadiene-styrene) rubber. The synthetic resin and rubber products are widely used in packaging, automotive components, tires, and various consumer goods.
The complex is also a significant producer of organic chemicals, with large-scale plants for phenol, acetone, cumene, and related derivatives. These chemicals serve as essential raw materials for plastics, solvents, and pharmaceuticals. The integration of refining and petrochemical operations allows Yanshan to maximize efficiency, flexibility, and product diversity, while advanced process control systems ensure high standards of safety and environmental performance.
SINOPEC Beijing Yanshan has invested heavily in environmental protection and sustainable development. The site is certified to ISO9001 for quality management and maintains rigorous health, safety, and environmental (HSE) systems. It has implemented innovative technologies for emissions reduction, energy efficiency, and waste treatment, and played a key role in providing clean hydrogen and fuels for events such as the Beijing Winter Olympics.
