The first installations for the oil refining were inaugurated in May 1958, a 170 hectare area in the neighborhood would come to be called Petrangol, about 14 kilometers from the city center and a few meters from Lighthouse Lobsters [North Bay of Luanda].
In 2012, the Luanda Refinery joined as a subsidiary, Sonaref, which became a subsidiary of Sonangol EP and sub-holding of the refining business.
Relative to its growth thanks to successive enlargements and to adapt to market developments, the refinery can reach the current treatment capacity of 2,800,000.00 metric tonnes per year, or about 57,000.00 barrels per day. The fuels produced are shipped from the refinery, by land and sea, through a network of pipelines and sealines, to Sonangol Distribuidora, which ensures its distribution and marketing.
At present, the refinery uses Ramas of Angolan origin, such as Palanca, Soyo, Nemba, Kuito.
