The Pemex Deer Park Refinery is a major petroleum refining complex located at 5900 Highway 225 East, Deer Park, Texas, approximately 20 miles east of downtown Houston along the Houston Ship Channel.

The refinery operates with a crude processing capacity of 312,500 barrels per day (bpd), with total processing capacity reaching 340,000 bpd when including secondary processing units. This makes it the 6th largest refinery in the United States and a critical asset in North American petroleum refining.

Capacity Breakdown

  • Primary Crude Distillation: 312,500 bpd total capacity
    • DU-2 (Main CDU): 270,000 bpd (accounts for 80% of production capacity)
    • DU-1 (Secondary CDU): 70,000 bpd
  • Total Processing Capacity: 340,000 bpd including secondary units

The refinery operates a sophisticated array of processing units designed to convert crude oil into high-value refined products:

  • Crude and Vacuum Distillation Units
  • Delayed Coker Unit (92,000 bpd capacity)
  • Fluid Catalytic Cracking Unit (FCCU) (70,000 bpd capacity)
  • Hydrocracking Unit (HCU) (70,000 bpd diesel production capacity)
  • Hydrotreating Units (including Gas Oil Hydro Treater)
  • Alkylation Units
  • Polymerization Units
  • Platformer Unit (catalytic reforming)
  • Amine Recovery Units (ARU6 and ARU7)
  • Sulfur Recovery Unit

The refinery demonstrates exceptional feed flexibility, capable of processing multiple grades of crude oil from diverse geographic sources:

  • Mexican crude (including Maya heavy sour crude up to 200,000 bpd historically)
  • Canadian crude
  • United States domestic crude
  • African crude
  • South American crude

In the third quarter of 2023, the refinery processed an average of 300,900 barrels of crude oil per day, representing 78% of its total capacity.

The refinery produces a comprehensive range of petroleum products to meet regional and international demand:

  • Gasoline: 129,100 bpd (Q3 2023)
  • Diesel Fuel: 94,700 bpd (Q3 2023)
  • Jet Fuel/Aviation Fuels: 26,500 bpd (Q3 2023)
  • Fuel Oil: 2,200 bpd (Q3 2023)
  • Petroleum Coke
  • Ship Fuel
  • Ultra-Low Sulfur Diesel (ULSD)
  • High-octane gasoline blendstocks
  • Petrochemical feedstocks
