The Rosario alkoxide production facility is located in Puerto General San Martín in the Santa Fe province of Argentina, strategically positioned in the heart of Argentina's soybean and biodiesel production region. The plant operates as part of Evonik Argentina S.A.'s manufacturing footprint and represents Evonik's dedicated alkoxide production hub serving all of South America.
The sodium methylate plant was inaugurated in 2013, marking Evonik's initial entry into South American alkoxide production, commenced operations with an initial capacity of 60,000 metric tons per year of sodium methylate solution.
In Dec 2019, Evonik announced plans to increase capacity by 50 percent to 90,000 metric tons per year in response to confirmed higher biodiesel mandates in Brazil and the competitiveness of Argentinean biodiesel exports worldwide. The capacity expansion was officially completed and announced on July 11, 2024, reaching the targeted 90,000 metric tons per year, representing a 50 percent increase over the original 60,000 tpy nameplate capacity.
The primary product produced by the facility is sodium methylate (NaOCH₃) solution in methanol, typically supplied at 25-30 percent concentration depending on customer specifications and application requirements.
