The Delfzijl methanol site, formerly operated by OCI Global under the trade name BioMCN, is now a wholly-owned asset of Methanex Europe Holdings S.A./N.V.

Originally commissioned in the early 1970s and acquired by OCI in 2015, the plant was incorporated into Methanex’s European portfolio upon completion of its acquisition of OCI’s methanol business on 27 June 2025.

The plant occupies a strategic site on the Eemskanaal with direct barge, rail and highway access to the Port of Delfzijl and onward European markets.

Although production has been idled since 2021 due to feedstock economics, the facility comprises two steam methane reformer-based methanol trains: the first train (M1) with a nameplate capacity of 440 000 t/y and the second train (M2), previously mothballed, rated at 430 000 t/y, for a combined gross capacity of 870 000 t/y.

Today, Methanex Europe Holdings has integrated the Delfzijl asset into its regional supply network, maintaining environmental permits and detailed restart plans should European natural gas pricing and decarbonized feedstock economics render the site’s two-train configuration commercially viable once again.
