 The Beaumont plant was originally constructed in the 1960s, restarted and fully refurbished by OCI in 2011 after a period of idling. Methanex acquired the facility from OCI Global in June 2025 as part of a $2.05 billion deal, which included two world-scale methanol plants in Beaumont and associated low-carbon methanol assets.

Methanol and Ammonia Manufacturing 

The facility has undergone over $800 million in upgrades and debottlenecking since 2011, ensuring modern, efficient operations and high reliability.

Its production capacity is:

• Methanol: 910,000 tonnes per year.
• Ammonia: 340,000 tonnes per year.

Green Methanol Activities

The green methanol activities—previously developed under OCI HyFuels and now fully integrated into Methanex’s operations—represent a significant step toward decarbonizing methanol supply for marine, road transport, and industrial sectors. Green methanol is produced within the same infrastructure as for conventional methanol manufacturing.

The plant incorporates renewable natural gas (RNG) and, in the future, green hydrogen and captured CO₂ as feedstocks. These are blended with or replace fossil natural gas in the reforming and synthesis steps, enabling the production of biomethanol and e-methanol without separate dedicated units.

• Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) is sourced from municipal landfills and biogas projects, including partnerships with the City of Beaumont. This renewable methane is injected into the facility’s feedstock stream, displacing fossil natural gas.
• Green hydrogen, produced via electrolysis using renewable electricity, is planned for future integration.
• Captured CO₂ can be combined with green hydrogen to produce e-methanol.
