The chemical activities at the Pernis site (now Shell Energy and Chemicals Park Rotterdam) are operated by Shell Nederland Chemie B.V. and form a key part of one of Europe’s largest integrated refining and chemical complexes.

Main Chemical Activities at Pernis

• Production Focus:
  Pernis manufactures a range of basic and intermediate chemicals, including lower olefins (such as propylene), chemical and hydrocarbon solvents, and polyols. These products are supplied in large volumes to other chemical companies and industries for use in plastics, paints, automotive fluids, insulation, and more.

• Integration with Refining:
  The chemical plants are fully integrated with the adjacent refinery, sharing feedstocks and utilities. Raw materials for chemical production come from the refinery, the Moerdijk chemical complex, and external suppliers. The integration enables efficient production and distribution of both fuels and chemicals.

• Key Processes and Units:
  The site includes specialized units for the production of solvents, polyols, and aromatics (such as benzene). Benzene produced at Pernis is transported via pipeline to the Moerdijk site for further processing into styrene monomer.

• Sustainability Initiatives:
  In addition to traditional chemical production, the site is expanding into bio-based chemicals and fuels. A major biofuels plant is under construction to produce sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and renewable diesel from waste oils and fats, supporting Shell’s transition to lower-carbon products.

• Distribution:
  Products are distributed via an extensive pipeline network, road, rail, and shipping terminals, connecting Pernis with domestic and international markets.
