The PT Petro Oxo Nusantara (PON) production complex spans 14 hectares and is the pioneering and largest facility in Indonesia and Southeast Asia for the manufacture of 2-Ethyl Hexanol (2-EH), Normal-Butanol (NBA), Iso-Butanol (IBA), and Liquid Carbon Dioxide (LCO₂). The plant began operations in September 1998 and has since achieved significant operational improvements and capacity expansions.

Feedstocks

Main Feedstocks are Liquid Propylene Gas and Natural Gas, which are essential for the synthesis of oxo alcohols and syngas (synthesis gas), which are the basis for the plant’s main products.

Process & Technologies

• Synthesis Gas (Syngas) Production:
  • Technology: Topsøe
  • Process: Converts natural gas into a mixture of carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrogen (H₂), forming the basis for downstream oxo synthesis.
     
• Oxo Alcohol Production:
  • Technology: Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation (Japan)
  • Process: 
    • Hydroformylation: Propylene reacts with syngas to form butyraldehyde (n- and iso- isomers).
    • Hydrogenation: Butyraldehyde is further hydrogenated to produce normal-butanol (NBA) and iso-butanol (IBA).
    • Aldol Condensation & Hydrogenation: For 2-Ethyl Hexanol (2-EH), butyraldehyde undergoes aldol condensation, followed by hydrogenation.
       
• Liquid CO₂ Production:
  • Technologies:
    • DOW process for CO₂ separation
    • UOP for PSA Membranes
    • UNION Engineering (Denmark) for liquefaction
  • Process: Captures and purifies CO₂ from flue gas, producing food-grade and industrial-grade liquid CO₂.
     
• Neo Pentyl Glycol (NPG) Project:
  • Technology: Advanced hydrogenation and eco-friendly processes.
  • Process: Aldol condensation of formaldehyde and isobutyraldehyde, followed by hydrogenation. The NPG plant, under construction as of December 2024, is the first in Indonesia and Southeast Asia.
