Names
N,N-Dimethylformamide; N,N-Dimethylmethanamide

Dimethylformamide is a colorless, polar aprotic liquid with the chemical formula HCON(CH₃)₂. It is miscible with water and most organic solvents, and is widely recognized for its high boiling point and strong solvency properties. DMF has a very faint or odorless character when pure, though commercial-grade samples may have a slightly fishy odor due to dimethylamine impurities.

The primary commercial route for DMF production is the direct carbonylation of dimethylamine with carbon monoxide (CO), a method that is highly efficient and yields a very pure product:

(CH₃)₂NH (dimethylamine) + CO (carbon monoxide) → HCON(CH₃)₂ (DMF)

DMF’s unique physical and chemical properties make it a key solvent in organic synthesis as well as for manufacturing pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, acrylic fibers, polyurethane coatings, synthetic leathers, adhesives, resins and electronical components.
