Names
Methanamide; Carbamaldehyde

Formamide (chemical formula HCONH₂) is the simplest carboxylic acid amide, consisting of a formyl group (–CHO) directly bonded to an amino group (–NH₂). It is a colorless, hygroscopic liquid at room temperature, fully miscible with water.

The modern commercial route for the industrial production of formamide is the carbonylation of ammonia.

CO (carbon monoxide) + NH₃ (ammonia) → HCONH₂ (formamide)

Formamide is widely used as a solvent in organic synthesis, as a softener for paper and fibers, and as an intermediate in the manufacture of pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and other chemicals.
