Nitrous oxide (N₂O), also known as dinitrogen monoxide or "laughing gas," is a colorless, non-flammable, slightly sweet-smelling and tasting gas composed of two nitrogen atoms and one oxygen atom.

At room temperature, it exists as a gas and is used widely as an anesthetic and analgesic in medicine and dentistry, as well as an oxidizer in rocket propulsion and a propellant in the food industry.

Nitrous oxide is produced industrially by the thermal decomposition of ammonium nitrate, and it acts as a potent greenhouse gas and atmospheric pollutant.
