Description

Sodium hydroxide solution is a strong alkaline solution composed of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) dissolved in water, industrially produced by variations of the electrolytic chlor-alkali process in a range of concentrations. Caustic soda is a colorless and odorless, but corrosive liquid. The solubility of NaOH in water varies from 418 g/L at 0°C to 3,370 g/L at 100°C.

Its uses are:

  • Industrial processes such as paper manufacturing, soap and detergent production, and water treatment.
  • Drain cleaning as it is effectively unclogging pipes and drains due to its ability to break down grease and other organic matter.
  • Laboratory use as a base for neutralizing acids or creating an alkaline environment for reactions.

Caustic soda solutions are available in different concentrations, including 25%, 30%, and 50%. At 20°C, the solubility of NaOH is approximately 109 grams per 100 mL of water. This translates to a saturated solution concentration of about 52.2% w/w of NaOH in water. Density values and molarity of NaOH solutions at 20°C are presented in the following table[2]:
