Hydrotreated Atmospheric Residuum
Description

Hydrotreated atmospheric residuum is a heavy petroleum fraction produced through high-pressure catalytic hydrotreating of atmospheric residue. The process achieves:

Key Features

  • Up to 95% sulfur removal through hydrodesulfurization reactions
  • Reduction of up to 65% in residual carbon content
  • Partial removal of metals, nitrogen, and other contaminants
  • Conversion of some heavy molecules to lighter products through mild hydrocracking

Process Details

The hydrotreating is conducted in fixed-bed reactors using:

  • Catalysts containing combinations of Cobalt, Nickel, Molybdenum, or Tungsten supported on alumina
  • Guard reactor beds to remove metals and protect main catalysts
  • Severe operating conditions requiring high hydrogen partial pressures
  • Multiple reactor stages for different treatment objectives

Applications

The hydrotreated product serves as:

  • Feedstock for FCC/RFCC units
  • Feed for hydrocracking or delayed coking units
  • Component in low sulfur fuel oil production
