Description

Light Diesel Oil (LDO) is a sub-category within the distillate fuel oil family — a blend of middle-distillate components from the crude distillation process. In trade, LDO is also referred to as marked oil (after the duty-marker dye used to identify tax-exempt non-road fuel grades), while the broader parent category is commonly abbreviated as distillate fuel or distillates in energy statistics and market reporting.

It sits at the heavier, less tightly specified end of the light distillate band: less refined and less tightly specified than automotive diesel, but lighter and less viscous than gas oil (AGO) or heavy fuel oil (HFO). LDO is used primarily for non-automotive, industrial applications — low-speed engines (typically below 750 rpm), boilers, furnaces, heaters, and industrial start-up fuels — where the higher specification and lower sulphur requirements of road diesel are not mandated, making it a cost-effective alternative for stationary and marine heating purposes.

LDO typically has a density in the range of 820–870 kg/m³ at 15 °C, spanning a band slightly heavier than automotive diesel and lighter than heavy fuel oils.
