Amine Salt (organic)

Nylon Salt—also known as polyamide salt or hexamethylenediammonium adipate—is an ionic compound formed by the reaction of adipic acid (a dicarboxylic acid) and hexamethylenediamine (a diamine), serving as the key intermediate for the production of polyamide 6,6 (nylon 6,6).

The salt is typically prepared by combining adipic acid and hexamethylenediamine in water, resulting in an aqueous solution of the salt. The resulting solution may be concentrated to a specified solids content (commonly 50–60% by weight) before being transferred directly to the polymerization reactor.

Traditionally, nylon salt is prepared by combining adipic acid and hexamethylenediamine in a precise 1:1 molar ratio. This stoichiometric balance ensures that each acid group reacts with an amine group, which is essential for producing high-molecular-weight nylon 6,6 with optimal properties.

Nylon salt can also be intentionally formulated with a non-stoichiometric ratio—meaning there is a deliberate excess of one of the reactants, either adipic acid or hexamethylenediamine. A common industrial example is the "Acid Rich Feed" (ARF), where the salt solution contains an excess of adipic acid.
