Mercaptans, also known as thiols, are sulfur-containing compounds with the general formula RSH, where R represents a hydrocarbon group. Methanethiol (also known as methyl mercaptan) is an organosulfur compound with the chemical formula CH3SH. Methanethiol is the simplest thiol and the only member of the thiol family that is in a gaseous state at room temperature (above 43°F/6°C). Primarily found in natural gas, it is a colourless gas, very flammable gas with a distinctive putrid smell. It is sometimes abbreviated as MeSH.
