Mercaptans, also known as thiols, are sulfur-containing compounds with the general formula RSH, where R represents a hydrocarbon group. Methanethiol (also known as methyl mercaptan) is an organosulfur compound with the chemical formula CH₃SH. Methanethiol is the simplest thiol and the only member of the thiol family that is in a gaseous state at room temperature (above 43°F/6°C). Primarily found in natural gas, it is a colourless gas, very flammable gas with a distinctive putrid smell. It is sometimes abbreviated as MeSH.
