Potassium chloride is used as a raw material for the production of potassium hydroxide. It occurs naturally, mostly as sylvinite, and can be purified by crystallisation from solution, flotation or electrostatic separation.
Typical compositions of potassium chloride used in chlor-alkali electrolysis are shown in the following table:
