Description

Silicon dioxide, also known as silica, is an oxide of silicon with the chemical formula SiO2[1].

SiO2 is a giant covalent structure. It is held together by strong covalent bonds. Consequently, it's a solid with a very high melting point. Its structure is very similar to that of diamond[2]

Silica is most commonly found in nature as quartz and in various living organisms. In many parts of the world, silica is the major constituent of sand. Silica is one of the most complex and most abundant family of materials, existing as a compound of several minerals and as a synthetic product[3]. All forms are white or colorless, although impure samples can be colored[1].

Notable examples include fused quartz, fumed silica, silica gel, and aerogels. It is used in structural materials, microelectronics (as an electrical insulator), and as components in the food and pharmaceutical industries[3]. Silicon dioxide is also a common fundamental constituent of glass[1].
