Description

Adiponitrile is an organic compound with the formula C₆H₈N₂ (also written as NC(CH₂)₄CN), consisting of a six-carbon linear chain with a nitrile (–CN) group at each end. It is also known as hexanedinitrile or 1,4-dicyanobutane.

It is a colorless to light yellow, oily liquid at room temperature with a slight bitter odor, fairly soluble in water (up to 90 g/L at 20 °C) and miscible with methanol, ethanol, and chloroform.

The primary use of adiponitrile is as an intermediate in the production of hexamethylenediamine, which is a key monomer for manufacturing polyamide 6,6 (nylon 6,6). It is also used in organic synthesis, as a corrosion inhibitor, rubber accelerator, and in the production of certain solvents and extractants.

Adiponitrile is most commonly produced by the hydrocyanation of butadiene or by the electrodimerization of acrylonitrile. It can also be synthesized by reacting adipic acid or its derivatives with ammonia under specific conditions.
