The Long Lake Oil Sands Project operated by CNOOC Petroleum North America ULC, a subsidiary of CNOOC Limited, is an in situ oil sands operation located approximately 40 km southeast of Fort McMurray. The project primarily uses steam-assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) to extract bitumen from deep reservoirs, producing a heavy crude that is treated and blended with diluent (dilbit) for pipeline transport.
Current operations focus on thermal recovery, with production in the range of ~70–75 kbbl/d and incremental expansions underway, including new well pads and the Long Lake Northwest development.
Originally designed as an integrated project combining SAGD with on-site upgrading using the OrCrude process, Long Lake included a refinery-type upgrader intended to convert bitumen into synthetic crude oil (SCO). However, following operational challenges and a major incident, the upgrader was permanently shut down in 2016. Since then, the facility has operated as a conventional SAGD project without upgrading, exporting diluted bitumen to external refining and upgrading infrastructure while focusing on improving thermal efficiency and production reliability.
