A parabolic trough (PT) solar thermal electric plant is a concentrated solar power (CSP) facility that uses curved mirror collectors to focus sunlight onto receiver tubes converting solar energy into thermal energy via a heat transfer fluid circulating through the system. The collectors track the sun from east to west, heating the fluid to temperatures between 400-500°C to generate steam that is is driving turbines connected to electrical generators.
The solar field is modular, consisting of parallel rows of collectors aligned on a north-south axis, with each Solar Collector Assembly (SCA) typically 95-200 meters long but as long as up to 600 meters. The system operates 10-12 hours daily during summer months at full capacity.
This technology represents the most proven and widely deployed solar thermal electric system, with plants ranging from 30 to 300 MW capacity. The system typically operates 10-12 hours daily during summer months and can include thermal storage or hybrid fossil fuel backup to ensure continuous power production.
A parabolic trough solar plant consists of three main parts:-
Solar Field Components: SCAs with tracking systems, Parabolic mirrors (reflectors) made of silvered glass or aluminum, Receiver tubes (absorbers) for heat transfer fluid, Foundation and metallic framework, Drive units with motors and control systems, Flexible connections between collectors, Sensors and tracking devices.
-
Power Block: Heat exchangers, Steam turbine/generator, Condenser, Cooling towers, Feedwater pumps, Balance of plant equipment.
-
Heat Transfer System: Heat transfer fluid (HTF) circulation system, Steam generation system, Optional thermal storage system, Optional fossil fuel backup heaters, Piping and control systems.
