PP technologies were developed in collaboration between Mitsui Chemicals and Montedison (now LyondellBasell) from 1975 to 1996, in which timeframe high-activity, high-stereospecificity catalysts were jointly developed.

The  Hypol-II process consists in 1st stage bulk polymerization in a series of two auto-refrigerated adiabatic loop reactors where homopolymers and random copolymers are made. Impact copolymers are then made in the second stage fluidzed bed reactor.

Differences with the Spheripol process are stated to reside in the design of the gas phase reactor with longer residence time, claimed to allow higher rubber content in impact copolymers, as well as to result in more stable operation without fouling or frequent shutdowns and longer running time before shutdown for cleaning.
