Configuration of Pengerang Petrochemical Company Sdn Bhd (Pengerang PC) and the Cracker Complex
Pengerang Petrochemical Company Sdn Bhd (Pengerang PC) operates the Petrochemical Complex within the Pengerang Integrated Complex (PIC), which is one of the largest and most advanced petrochemical facilities in Malaysia and Southeast Asia. The configuration includes a world-scale Steam Cracker Complex at its core, with extensive downstream integration.
Key Components and Configuration
1. Steam Cracker Complex
- Function: The heart of the petrochemical operations, converting naphtha and other feedstocks into essential building blocks for the chemical industry.
- Main Products: Ethylene, propylene, butadiene, benzene, and pyrolysis gasoline.[1][2][6]
- Capacities:
- Ethylene: 1,2 million tonnes per year (tpy)
- Propylene: 610,000 tpy
- Butadiene: 180,000 tpy
- Benzene: 165,000 tpy[2][6]
- Key Units:
- Steam Cracker Unit (SCU)
- Pygas Hydrogenation Unit (PGHT)
- Butadiene Extraction Unit (BDU)
- Benzene Extraction Unit (BZU)
- MTBE/IBU Unit[3]
2. Downstream Petrochemical Facilities
- Polymers:
- Polypropylene (PP): 900,000 tpy
- Polyethylene (PE): 750,000 tpy (including both Linear-Low Density PE and High Density PE)[2][3]
- Glycols:
- Ethylene Oxide/Ethylene Glycol (EO/EG) Unit[3]
- C4 Derivatives:
- Isononanol (INA): C4-based alcohol for plasticizers[1][3]
- Other Units:
- Automated Storage Retrieval System (ASRS) for product warehousing
- Air Separation Unit (ASU) for oxygen and nitrogen supply (1,600 TPD oxygen, 1,800 TPD nitrogen)
- Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP)
- Solid Product Jetty (SPJ) for logistics[3]
3. Integration and Utilities
- Integrated Supply: Receives feedstock from the adjacent refinery and supplies olefins and aromatics to downstream units.[1][6]
- Utilities: Supported by a dedicated cogeneration plant, air separation units, and deepwater terminal for efficient logistics and export.[4][5]
Production and Output
- Total Nameplate Capacity: Over 3.4 million tonnes per annum of key petrochemicals (ethylene, propylene, butadiene, benzene, MTBE).[6]
- End Products: Polyethylene, polypropylene, ethylene glycols, C4 derivatives, and other intermediates used in a wide range of consumer and industrial goods.[1][6]
