5th Jan 2021: Shandong Binhua Group is going to invest in another project! This time, the latest technology is also applied. Among the chemical companies in Shandong Province, Binhua Group is undoubtedly a more prominent one. This large enterprise, founded in the last century, still shows great vitality today. Not long ago, Binhua Group also cooperated with Tsinghua University Industrial Technology Research Institute to develop new technology, successfully ending the foreign technology monopoly. The new technology mastered by Binhua Group is the isobutane co-oxidation propylene oxide technology that will be used in the propylene oxide project. The success of this research and development also provides technical support for the new project to be built. Recently, Shandong Binhua New Materials Co., Ltd., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Binhua Group, stated that the second phase of the C3 and C4 comprehensive utilization project using this new technology is about to start construction. The second phase of the project, with a total investment of 4 billion yuan, is expected to take two years to build. The construction content includes a propylene oxide co-production tert-butyl alcohol unit and a synthetic ammonia unit with an annual output of 150,000 tons. Among them, the annual output of the propylene oxide unit is 300,000 tons, and the annual output of the tert-butyl alcohol unit is 780,000 tons. 28th Jan 2022: Indorama Ventures enters world-first China license agreement with Shandong Binhua New Material Co. Ltd.  Indorama Ventures Public Company Limited (IVL), a global sustainable chemical company, has signed a license agreement with Shandong Binhua New Material Co., Ltd. (Binhua), a subsidiary of Befar Group, a leading petroleum and chemical enterprise in China, to build, own and operate a propylene oxide (PO), t-Butanol (TBA) and t-Butyl methyl ether (MTBE) co-production unit. Featuring the world’s only MTBE ‘single-step’ reaction technology, IVL’s proprietary innovation, the project is part of the ‘C3 and C4’ comprehensive utilization project in Shandong, China. It is one of the largest in the province, covering an area of over one million square meters. “On completion, this project will be able to produce 600,000 tons of propylene, 800,000 tons of butane isomerization, 150,000 tons of synthetic ammonia, 240,000 tons of propylene oxide and 742,000 tons of MTBE per year. With the lowest operational cost of all other propylene oxide technologies and close to 50 consecutive years of successful and safe operation, the license with IVL was selected because of its superiority, unique features, and competitiveness,” said Mr. Liu Hongan, Vice President of Befar Group and General Manager of Shandong Binhua New Material Co. Ltd. Under the contract, IVL will provide a design package, technology, operational know-how and training to enable the construction and operation of a PO co-production with MTBE and TBA units for Binhua. 30th Sep 2024: Binhua New Materials' 240,000-ton epoxy resin and 742,000-ton MTBE plants completed delivery. On September 28, the 240,000/742,000 tons/year propylene oxide/methyl tert-butyl ether (PO/MTBE) plant undertaken by Binhua Engineering Project Department was successfully handed over. The project broke ground in March 2023 and the entire plant was handed over in September 2024, which took 18 months. (Source)

  • Project content: After the project reaches full capacity, it will add 240,000 tons of propylene oxide, 742,000 tons of methyl tert-butyl ether, 7,500 tons of acetone, and 5,000 tons of molybdenum oxide. After completion, it will reach 80% of its capacity in the first year and 100% in the second year.
    • Propylene oxide (PO) is mainly used to produce polyethers, propylene glycol, etc. It has nearly 100 downstream products and is an important raw material for fine chemical products. At present, Binhua's propylene oxide production capacity has reached 270,000 tons. This time, it plans to build a new  propylene oxide project with an annual output of 240,000 tons. After the above project is put into production, it can further increase the company's core  product production capacity and increase the company's market share.
    • Methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) is mainly used as a raw material for the production of finished gasoline in China, accounting for more than 90% of the total  MTBE demand. As a downstream product market for MTBE, the increase in demand for MMA will promote the development of the MTBE market to a  certain extent.
    • It is understood that the PO/TBA unit of this project will use the propylene produced by the propane dehydrogenation unit of the C3 and C4 comprehensive utilization project (Phase I) (hereinafter referred to as the "Phase I Project"), the isobutane produced by the butane isomerization unit, and the oxygen  produced by the air separation unit as raw materials, using a new production process - co-oxidation method to prepare propylene oxide, further expand the company's propylene oxide production scale, and improve the company's overall profitability; the synthetic ammonia unit of this project will use the by-product hydrogen of the propane dehydrogenation unit of the Phase I project and the nitrogen produced by the air separation unit to synthesize liquid ammonia, thereby realizing comprehensive utilization of resources.
