Isoamylenes

Isoamylenes are unsaturated hydrocarbons that belong to the family of alkenes, specifically pentenes with the molecular formula C₅H₁₀. The term "isoamylenes" commonly refers to a mixture of two structural isomers:

  • 2-Methyl-1-butene (also called 1-isoamylene or gamma-isoamylene), chemical formula CH₂=CHCH₂CH₃-CH₃
  • 2-Methyl-2-butene (also known as beta-isoamylene or trimethylethylene), chemical formula (CH₃)₂C=CHCH₃

Isoamylenes are typically produced during the cracking of petroleum hydrocarbons or as byproducts in refinery C5 streams.

Isoamylenes are used in the synthesis of ethers, notably TAME (tert-Amyl methyl ether), as well as various fine chemicals.
