Description

E-methanol is produced by combining green hydrogen produced by electrolysis of water and a source of sustainable of carbon dioxide (captured CO2, biogenic CO2, CO2 from waste treatment, etc.)

  • The hydrogen needed for producing e-methanol is produced by electrolysis of water, while biogenic carbon dioxide is captured for example from a fermentation process. Methanol synthesis is a high-pressure process, carried out at temperatures of 320–450°C and pressures 5-10 MPa, typically using Cu/Zn/Al catalysts.

    CO2 + 3 H2 → CH3OH + H2O

  • Hydrogen can be produced from methanol by direct reformation of methanol. Methanol Stem Reforming (MSR) reaction is conventionally carried out at relatively low temperatures between 240°C and 320°C, using mostly copper-based catalysts.

    CH3OH + H2O → CO2 + 3 H2

E-methanol can be used as a chemical intermediate, a solvent, as a fuel, especially for fuel cells, but also as a hydrogen carrier to safely transport hydrogen over long distances.
