Description

Poly-3-hydroxybutyrate is probably the most common type of Polyhydroxyalkanoate.[1] It is a Biopolymer generated as a Carbon Reserve in a wide variety of Bacteria and is produced industrially through Fermentation of Glucose by the Bacterium Alcaligenes Eutrophus as a strictly isotactic, highly crystalline, linear Polyester of the Monomer 3-(R)-Hydroxybutyric Acid.[2],[3]

P3HB is a biodegradable and renewable Source with thermoplastic properties similar to Polypropylene. It has many properties that are attractive for biomedical applications, including being a Polyester-like Polyglycolide and being biodegradable within the body.[2]
