Description

Hexamethylenediamine (HMDA), also known as hexane-1,6-diamine or 1,6-diaminohexane, is an organic compound with the chemical formula H₂N-(CH₂)₆-NH₂. It is a diamine, meaning it contains two amine functional groups (-NH₂) located at each end of a six-carbon aliphatic chain (hexamethylene).

HMDA is typically a colorless crystalline solid, sometimes yellowish in commercial samples, with a strong amine odor. It is soluble in water and polar solvents due to the presence of amine groups. It is highly basic and reactive, capable of forming salts and polymers.

The primary use of hexamethylenediamine is as a monomer in the production of polyamide 6,6 (nylon 6,6) through polycondensation with adipic acid. It is also used to produce hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI) for polyurethanes and serves as a cross-linking agent in epoxy resins.

Hexamethylenediamine is industrially produced by the hydrogenation of adiponitrile, typically using cobalt, iron, or Raney nickel catalysts under controlled conditions.
