Adipic acid (also known as hexanedioic acid) is a straight-chain aliphatic dicarboxylic acid with the chemical formula C₆H₁₀O₄ (HOOC–(CH₂)₄–COOH), appearing as a white crystalline solid at room temperature. It is the most important industrial dicarboxylic acid, with global production exceeding 2.5 million tonnes per year, primarily used as a key monomer in the synthesis of nylon 6,6 by polycondensation with hexamethylenediamine. Adipic acid is also used in the manufacture of polyurethanes, plasticizers, food additives (E355), and pharmaceuticals.
Adipic acid is mainly produced by the oxidation of a mixture of cyclohexanol and cyclohexanone (known as KA oil) with nitric acid, a process that also generates nitrous oxide (N₂O) as a by-product.
