Axens was formed in 2001 by the merger of legacy technology and catalyst businesses stemming from IFP Energies nouvelles and independent catalyst firms. The key predecessor entities that developed and patented core technologies now under the Axens umbrella are:
- IFP Énergies nouvelles (IFPEN) – Industrial Division
- Procatalyse
- Hydrocarbon Research Institute (HRI) acquired by Axens in 1995.
