Butachimie is a leading chemical manufacturing company specializing in the production of key intermediates for the nylon (polyamide 6.6) value chain. The company is headquartered in Chalampé, Alsace, France, and operates one of the world’s largest facilities for the production of adiponitrile (ADN), a critical precursor for nylon 6.6.

The company was established in 1966 as a partnership between DuPont de Nemours and Rhône-Poulenc. Butachimie has evolved through several industry changes, maintaining its focus on polyamide intermediates. Prior to February 2020, Butachimie was a joint venture between Solvay S.A. (Belgium) and INVISTA. In 2020, as part of a broader transaction involving the polyamide business, BASF acquired Solvay’s 50% stake in Butachimie, making BASF and INVISTA the sole shareholders from that date forward, with a long-term agreement (renewed in 2014 for 99 years) ensuring stability and continued investment.

Butachimie is a major producer of:

  • Adiponitrile (ADN): A key intermediate for the synthesis of hexamethylenediamine (HMD) and, ultimately, nylon 6.6.
  • Hexamethylenediamine (HMD): Produced on-site, mainly by BASF personnel, and used in the manufacture of nylon salt (AH salt) for polyamide 6.6.
  • Other Polyamide Intermediates: Serving applications in technical plastics, textile fibers, industrial fibers, and high-performance coatings.
